World Building June 2018 – Day 2, Geography

merigreenleaf:

And here June starts with the one part of worldbuilding I haven’t actually done much for yet. (Despite, ya know, having a professional cartographer as my main character…) I had a basic map of my main country, at least in terms of the shape of the island, the biggest cities, and where the largest forests and rivers were located, but for the rest of the continent? Nothing. So today I sat down with my husband and we made a map for the continent where my current stories all take place.

It’s so cool to see this world coming to life! Concordia’s got the most detail, but I had some idea of what to do with Galanvoth and Montglace since those are the other two locations that have so far been relevant to the series. (Montglace is where the twins grew up, Galanvoth is where Firedrake was born and where Blythe lived for a while.) I haven’t named any of the other countries yet. Stars are capital cities, circles are large cities, Xs are potential locations (I’ll get to this in a minute), trees are forests, and upside down Vs are mountains. The squarish shape in the center is something we decided belongs on this continent: a neutral trade city/area. I’ll eventually add more dotted lines (large roads used for travel for trade) leading to this spot.

I don’t have much else to say about geography yet since that’s something I’m still working on, but here’s a post from WBJ a few years ago with a slightly more detailed map of Concordia. After the “read more” link I talk about how I made this map using multi-sided dice. 🙂
