I remember posting somewhere once in a thread about why girls aren’t exploited in animation anymore where some guy said, “all the disney girls are drawn to be generally attractive, but I don’t think there are any eye-candy men… or are there? Are there any Disney men that lots of girls like?” and I mentioned Roger. Tons of girls replied agreeing with me and the original guy was like “wait, Roger? from 101 Dalmatians? What’s attractive about him, he’s tall and lanky and has a big nose, he isn’t muscley at all! Wouldn’t you all prefer Gaston or something? Or do you girls think his big nose is indicative of something else?” and I was like “no, you idiot, he’s a silly, goofy guy who likes animals and can play a bunch of instruments, that’s why he’s attractive. What’s the matter with you? Gaston, seriously?”
This is why we need more girls in animation. And more guys like Roger apparently.
This is why I laugh my ass of whenever dudes talk about how men are “objectified” by the media too. Because 9 times out of 10, what men think is “women objectifying men” are characters like Gaston.
And Gaston is NOT a woman-driven fantasy. Gaston is a male wish fulfillment fantasy. Gaston is not what women want, he is what men want to be. He is hyper-masculinity to an extreme degree, dripping with sexism and testosterone. The fact that men think that Gaston is what women want says an awful lot about those men.
While I don’t want to generalize, female fans tend to prefer a very different kind of male hero. We like the Rogers, the Milos, the Hercules. Genuinely kind, often awkward men who are sometimes vulnerable and respectful to women.
Yes, this is a generalization. I own up to that. But I think it’s important to remember that there is often VERY big difference between what MEN want to be and what women WANT in our media.
Reblogging this again because fucking this. And hell, even the muscley dudes (see: Khal Drogo, Hercules, Thor, Captain America) are loved, not because they are muscley, but because they are sweet and loving and adorable. We love Thor because his mispronounces “Hubble” as “Hooble,” not because of what he can do with a hammer.
Reblogging for the awesome comments.
I’m just here to say I love the animation of Roger so fucking much. look how fucking smooth and graceful and agile he is. 2d animation is amazing and i just want to hug it
All of this.
Okay, listen, to return briefly to the idea of Gaston: Beauty and the Beast is actually the first animated Disney screen play written by a woman. Linda Woolverton, the screenwriter, got a lot of attention for creating a self-proclaimed feminist heroine in 1991, but she also had a *lot* to say about Gaston. She didn’t stumble into that villain by mistake. She crafted him based on her own experiences with men and even her ex-boyfriends, and said: “To Gaston, Belle wasn’t a person; she was a possession. And I think it’s great for little boys to see that Beauty doesn’t choose him. Not only can they look at Gaston as an example of how not to treat women, but they can hopefully be taught by the Beast, a macho guy who is comfortable with his feelings and gentleness. He could teach a lot of men, in fact, about sensitivity.“
Not only is Gaston not a woman’s fantasy, he’s literally a woman’s horror story.
No, but seriously, do you know how amazing Vincent Price is?
Not just as an actor, although he was a blast to watch in everything he did. He’s one of those actors who’s just clearly having a whale of a time, no matter how bad the film is. He’s just genuinely happy to be there (it makes his villains a particular delight, and he played a LOT of them).
But did you know that he was also on the PFLAG board after his daughter came out to him? And that he was one of the earliest celebrities to speak out against the silence surrounding the AIDS epidemic?
Did you know that when his daughter came out to him, he admitted to her that it had been difficult for him during his first two marriages, because his wives had not been pleased to find out that their husband was just as interested in men as they were?
That’s right, kids, Vincent Price was BISEXUAL AS FUCK, and it was one of those open Hollywood secrets. And his wife Coral Browne? The one he grew old with and wrote cookbooks with and was basically ridiculously sweet with?
Also bisexual as fuck. They were the queer power couple of Hollywood in the 70s. His daughter, Victoria, grew up around Rock Hudson and members of the LGBT community. When she came out, Vincent Price became a board member of PFLAG and was just about the most accepting and awesome dad.
Did you know that Vincent Price played Oscar Wilde in a one-man play, and when it was denounced by anti-gay activist Anita Bryant, he dismissed her right back, saying that Oscar Wilde had already come up with a term for her: a Woman of No Importance? Because Vincent Price was deliciously witty and an awesome person.
Let me conclude with a quote from his daughter (from this article, where I got a lot of this information):
‘“In a funny way, and I think I’m going to cry, he understood me at 22 better than I understood myself then,” Price concluded. “Of course, he was in his 70s and lived a hell of a lot longer than I had, and he understood that at the end of the day it’s about who and what and how we love. And I have not been a person who has been very successful at conventional relationships, but loving well and loving deeply has been the most important thing to me.”’
Happy birthday, Vincent Price. You were a gem of an actor, and an even greater human being.
This is Ari, a canon asexual character from the Catalan TV series “Com si fos ahir”, produced by Catalonia’s TV station TV3.
The show treats Ari’s sexuality in a very natural way, with normality, but also shows how she struggles to tell her partner and portrays many conversations and situations that ace people face everyday. And the show makes it very clear: it’s not a trauma, lack of experience, nor fear.
And [spoiler alert] she trusts her partner and tells him everything, and he stills loves her as much and tries really hard to un-learn all the misinformation that we are taught since we are little.
I had never seen a canon ace character in any show, film, nor book. And seeing one in my own culture (and not in American media for once) is very special.
I have seen bits of the show on TV but because of when it airs I haven’t watched it all. I have found out about Ari thanks to a publication on the website of the Associació Catalana d’Asexuals (Catalan Association of Asexuals). I will watch the whole show as soon as I can!
John Mulaney, a man who is iconically known for loving his wife, after being told by Jerry Seinfeld that his wife only thinks shes good at something
Well done OP, you’ve managed to capture the moment John’s spirit left his body
Jerry’s lucky that John is too polite to throw hands
Okay but I just went and watched this for myself and it’s WORSE
He’s. So uncomfortable. It’s obvious. I cut out the part where John kind of muttered, “That is true, isn’t it” about how all men think they’re funny, but his face is just screwed up in this ‘oh god what have i done what have i signed up for this is not good and this will probably go into my next comedy special of awkwardness’
Just watched this omg bless john bc jerry just keeps trying to do some “take my wife” bullshit and john very politely goes no, no.
proud of John for restraining himself from murdering a man on camera
This is Mr. Jerry “uwu kids these days are so sensitive so I can’t perform on college campuses anymore” Seinfeld.
I like to think neither Dex or Nursey have been in a real relationship like at all. So they kinda just have these feelings
so nursey just has the impulse to drape himself around dex and he’s just like seems legit and does it
and dex is just like making all of his meals at this point that aren’t made by a dining hall or bitty you know for nurseys safety and also it makes him warm inside but that makes sense
like you know bros sleep in the same bed because one of them is afraid of storms and one of them cant handle their horror movies
just bros being bros
and like they’re literally dating but because of the Haus thin ass friendship boundary lines like no one knows including themselves
It makes me so sad and mad the way men just like…thrive off of women’s pain. They play them, they make them cry, all the fucking time and it’s just expected to be part of the experience of a boy. To just fucking break women and use them and its fun and games!!! And i hate it I just hate it
14 year old girl spotted I repeat 14 year old girl spotted
Are you implying it’s normal for a 14 year old girl to constantly be hurt by boys her age?…
Wow I wonder if maybe… that was OP’s point…
young woman: expresses sadness and pain at men’s cruelty and manipulation towards her and all women
men: haha emotional hormonal hysterical teen girls am i right??? haha making fun of young women is so edgy and intelligent
we all know capitalism is fucking evil but one of my favorite stories to tell from Retail Hell is that time my district manager got annoyed that 2 poor people were taking food out of the dumpster occasionally so he told us all to start pouring bleach over all the items we threw out so people couldn’t use them/it would hurt them if they touched it directly. never did that and absolutely have participated in “employee theft” by stealing bags of food from the dumpsters to donate to the local food bank but like. he really did just want us to directly harm people over food that was already in the literal trash.
when managers and CEOs get up in arms about “employee theft” they’re actually talking about people like me who don’t throw out the 30 pairs of shoes that we weren’t able to sell and instead bag them up and throw them behind the dumpster for retrieval/donation later. I once took home $450 of food and another night got $500 worth of makeup. Perfectly good electronics get thrown away bc the packaging was tampered with. We throw away food, cosmetics, and household products 30-60 days before their expiration dates (which are also kinda bullshit anyway). The whole retail model is structured around this idea of massive waste.
i love being a camp counselor…obvi t posing is big rn so we use it as a quiet call and u havent LIVED until youve seen 100 children t posing absolutely silently in a field
i taught an 8 yr old in my swim class how to do a backfloat by saying “remember to t pose!!” and she got it
