okay so i have this idea where virgil has like a crapton of scars bc mental scars show up physically on his body and that’s why he wears the big hoodie: he’s hiding his scars

When thomas has his heart broken a scar appears across virgils face. He tries to cover it with heavy makeup but it doesnt always work

#do you think he has to struggle not to envy the others with their perfect unblemished skin#each time roman goes dreamchasing or patton falls in love hes afraid he’ll get scars again

I don’t think he minded at first since he hadn’t manifested and no one could really see them. After all, no one had ever been to his room before.

After that, though, he had to struggle with wanting the others to not be held back by him and not wanting to experience another painful scar get etched somewhere on his body.

Okay but wait are they neat thin lines? Like tallies? Counting how many times Thomas has (unintentionally) hurt him?

Or are they jagged rough, lines? Like someone scratched him with claws?

Do they actually hurt Virgil each time they show up? Like will he be making food or something and then Thomas gets a hurtful message or something and then Virgil just staggers.

Will he be in a room with the other sides and suddenly his eyes go wide and he clutches at his chest as a new mark slowly grates its way down his skin. All the while he’s trying to not make it too noticeable for the others.

But of course there’s Patton.

I’d like to think that their jagged and rough—being hurt is never “perfect” in any way.

Every time hurts like the first time because Thomas is such a good person and believes in the best of people. When it’s something small like a painful message, he barely notices anymore.

But when it’s something big—something you can’t hide even from yourself—everything begins to as the scar takes its shape. Another ragged edge that defines him through pain.

It was supposed to be a nice movie night.

Thomas had been editing his videos, and besides the casual input from Roman, the sides were given a break, for lack of a better term. Tangled had been put on the tv and they were all relaxing. Well all except Virgil, had been relaxing.

Virgil’s nerves were going haywire. He and Thomas had played it down in front of the others, but they both knew something was wrong. Very wrong.

They had arguments with (s/o) before, but none like this. Not so much angry yelling with extreme stretches of petty silence. It had been going on since Monday, and Virgil felt like there wasn’t going to be a happy resolution to this argument.

Virgil felt it. The second Thomas got a text, Virgil knew it was going to hurt.

“Guys I’ll be back. I gotta… go to the bathroom.” He said weakly, getting up quickly. He walked out of the room as fast as possible, leaving the others to question what had happened.

Virgil locked the door behind them just as Thomas read the text. It was over. The relationship was over. The boy Thomas had fallen for had called it off. He felt the scar forming before it appeared. It dragged down his face, ripping the skin and sowing it back together in almost the same moment. The pain of the breaking skin mixed with the burn of fast healing skin made him almost cry out. In pain. In sadness. But Virgil held it in. He would not put this burden on the others. It was unnecessary.

After a few minutes of the scar forming, Virgil was able to stand up, slowly, and look at his skin. He sobbed silently as he saw the jagged, red scar, still angry and burning. He knew he would never have perfect skin like the others. Patton and his child like, adorable freckles. Roman, with skin as strong as the marble they sculpt hero’s out of. And Logan. With skin as sleek and smooth as the newest tech on the line. But his face. Virgil’s face. He thought it was safe. He thought the scars would never reach it. His face was the only part of his skin that was almost flawless and now, this scar, this damn scar! Ruined it.

Patton, Roman, and Logan had become busy, taking care of Thomas, and each other. They were all too busy mourning the relationship to notice that Virgil hadn’t joined them. Roman did momentarily, but assumed Hot Topic was dealing with the break up alone. However, Patton had a nagging feeling in the back of his mind. He tried to push passed the grief enough to focus on it, but he couldn’t think clearly. Patton let the thought pass, though he planned to revisit it later.

Virgil worked his hardest. Tried to make his pale foundation cover as much as possible, but even the thickest layers of makeup couldn’t hide the dark scar. Virgil slid back down, sitting against the cabinet. He couldn’t face the others, not when his face was permanently distorted. He looked like a damn Disney villain. Roman would find that appropriate.

Virgil never wanted to look at Roman again. Or any of the others. He had just started to join them and then the scar ruined it. Patton would hide his disgust, Logan would be brutally honest, but Roman. Roman would find the creative insults. The ones that would hurt the scars of loneliness in Virgil’s heart. Virgil was never facing them again.

Then the knock came. Virgil froze. Shit shit shit was a chorus echoing in his mind. His life was over if the others found him like this.

“Hey kiddo,” Patton’s sweet voice came through the door, his voice raw from crying, “I just wanted to check on you. We haven’t seen you since before the… the… incident, and we wanted to make sure you were ok.” Patton almost lost it, still in denial about it being a breakup.

“Yes Virgil, the pain is a lot to bear, and being around those who care about you will usually help.” Logan said, unable to hide that he too had been crying. Virgil stayed silent, maybe they would just leave. It would be for the best. Virgil was meant to be alone.

“Hey Virge.” Romans voice was extremely quiet, unsettling Virgil. There wasn’t even a clever nickname or witty quip along with his statement. Only the under used nickname Virgil had given himself, “I know it hurts. I know it’s a lot. But you.. you aren’t alone. We are all here. We all feel it. It’s like a bullet. Or being stabbed. The pain will remain for a long time after this day, but if we stick together. The four of us, together. We can get through it. It’ll be hard, but together we are stronger than the pain. But first… first you’ve gotta let us in.”

Roman’s speech was as genuine as all his others, bringing more tears into Virgil’s eyes. He put his hoodie on, pulling it tightly. Maybe that will hide the scar, he thought. Virgil slowly unlocked the door, opening it cautiously. As soon as it was open wide enough, Patton tackled him in a hug. Virgil tried not to, but the way Patton’s shoulder had rubbed his faced as the emotional side embraced Virgil hurt, making Virgil wince.

“Virgil, what’s wrong?” Logan asked immediately.

“Nothing, it’s fine guys. I’m fine.” Virgil said, hoping it was convincing.

“No you’re not kiddo.” Patton said. Virgil knew that lying to someone who lied to themselves constantly was virtually impossible. Roman looked confused, reaching a hand towards Virgil’s hood.

“May I?”

Virgil wanted to stay in hiding, wanted to sink into his room and never let anyone see him in the light of day ever again. But something inside him forced him to stay as Roman stretched the hoodie out and took it off Virgil’s head.

The other 3 aides gasped, seeing the deep scar on Virgils face.

“Virgil.. what? How did this happen?” Patton asked, gently looking at Virgil’s face.

“It.. it happens, every so often.” Virgil mumbled, pulling his bangs in front of his face.

“When?” Logan asked, “I’ve never seen anything like this.”

“Wh-when Thomas g-gets hurt. It… it appears. On me. Phy-physically.” Virgil explained as tears started to spill over again.

Virgil was waiting for the inevitable. The others expressing disgust and leaving him. What he didn’t expect, was the other three sweeping him into a group hug as he cried.

“Virgil why didn’t you tell us? We could’ve been there for you.” Patton exclaimed.

“There are many things we could’ve done to help make you more comfortable or to help the scars heal more healthy.” Logan explained, rubbing Virgil’s back.

“Hurt?” Roman asked, “like emotionally hurt? For example…”

“A hear break.” Patton said sorrowfully.

“A distroyed dream.” Roman continued.

“A failed goal.” Logan added with a sigh.

“It all falls on you?” Patton asked.

Virgil nodded slightly, “I didn’t want…” Virgil sniffled, “I didn’t want you, or Thomas, to hold yourselves back. I wanted you all to live your lives without worrying about me.”

“Virgil… you don’t have to let yourself hurt in silence, just to let us continue on.” Logan told him.

“You can let us in. Be honest with us kiddo. We don’t want you to be hurt.” Patton added.

Roman hugged Virgil again, “like I said. We will get through this, together.”
