The Rise of Netflix Competitors Has Pushed Consumers Back Toward Piracy
You know, it’s almost like that was the fucking problem in the first place you stupid bastards
the absolute need for every online video platform to become just like cable tv despite the fact their success comes from not being like cable tv is just overwhelming
I don’t know it actually feels like they’re trying to be worse than cable because
Disney, for example, will soon be pulling most of its fare from Netflix as it launches its own streaming service this year. Studies have shown that nearly every major broadcaster will have launched their own streaming service by 2022. And these companies are increasingly choosing to keep their own content as in-house exclusives in order to drive subscriptions.
cable doesn’t make you pay for each individual channel or every channel owned by one company separately. And from the looks of it, most of these specific channel and company streaming sites are about as much money, if not more, than the more broad platforms like Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon.
What really gets me about this is how obvious it is they didn’t grasp what it was about legal streaming services that drove piracy down to begin with. People were finally able to find the shows and movies they liked for cheap! Sometimes even for free with ad support, was was Hulu’s old way of doing things and as is still most of how Crunchyroll handles things.
I think the worst part is it assumes either everyone just has that much money or everyone has some deeply embedded brand loyalty and will flock quickly to their favorite brand in absence of everything else. But as many of those millennial shaming articles love to point out, most of us don’t have brand loyalty! Especially with entertainment! We like more than one thing! We like variety! Why shouldn’t we? Why should we just take whatever the same people feed us forever?
The problem with these subscription services is that while they don’t cost much individually, it all adds up. If you want to watch all of the exclusive shows legally, then you’ve gotta subscribe not just to Netflix, but also to Amazon Prime, Hulu, Crunchyroll, DC Universe, that upcoming Disney streaming service, that thing Apple are doing, etc.
Doesn’t seem so cheap now, does it?
I only use a few streaming services. If the show I want to watch is not on Netflix or Amazon Prime, then I will pirate it, because it is not worth paying an extra subscription fee just for one show.
